Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the global leader in cloud infrastructure and services, with a strong presence in Switzerland since 2016. AWS opened its first Swiss office in Zurich in April 2016, followed by a second office in Geneva in December 2017, and launched the Europe (Zurich) region with three Availability Zones on November 9, 2022. The Zurich region now offers over 140 services and supports low-latency, sovereign-cloud operations for local customers . AWS has invested CHF 5.9 billion through 2036 into Swiss infrastructure, creating approx. 2 500 full-time equivalent roles annually and contributing CHF 16.3 billion to the Swiss GDP. Over 10 000 Swiss organisations – including ETH Zurich, Swiss Post, Swisscom, Novartis, Richemont – build and run critical workloads in the Zurich region. AWS also empowers education and skills development through AWS Academy, re/Start, Educate, and GenAI initiatives.
