Digitizing Telecom Assets and Implementing a Domain-Specific GIS at Office Fédéral des Routes (OFROU)

A case study on the deployment of a telecom network along the Swiss motorway system and the implementation of a dedicated Geographic Information System (GIS) for fiber optic infrastructure management.

This large-scale project involves the surveying and integration of telecom infrastructure — including manholes, ducts, and cable routes — into a GIS, covering more than 500 km of motorways, and their subsequent use within a specialized geospatial platform.

The presentation will highlight:

• the data collection methodology and GIS data modeling,
• the coordination challenges between key stakeholders (OFROU, 1SPATIAL, CRM),
• the use of the GIS as a strategic and operational tool for managing OFROU’s fiber optic network.
